This is part of my ongoing series of articles about setting up your own software publishing business (cause FileMaker is very good option for doing that). This was originally published by me in a guide called FileMaker Software Publishing back in 2002. .

KEEPING THE BOOKS
Being a FileMaker designer, you will have a leg up in this area. If you don’t like the bookkeeping method of one or any of the off the shelf packages… you can roll out your FileMaker design skills and build your own solution. Generally, if you can output the information in a way that an accountant or tax specialist can understand, you are in good shape. There are robust tools and plugins that allow the linking between FileMaker and traditional accounting packages such as QuickBooks.

There are a number of decisions you must make in regards to your bookkeeping. One is to choose the ( at the moment it happens method ) cash accounting or ( when the sale / expense paperwork occurs ) accrual accounting. Another choice is your choice of an accountant and your accounting software.

However, being a longtime FileMaker fan, I cannot help but recommend using a FileMaker solution to track your clients, prospects, sales, expenses and payments. Then build a way to export or print the reports in a format that is best for your chose accountant.
