In 2011, I set myself some “soft skill” goals to help with the day job of a “heavily FileMaker biased” software tools manager. I thought I’d share the reading material I digested for the last year and perhaps a some brief feedback about each.

All but one of these books I consumed in unabridged audio book format from audible.com. This allows a reader to consume the content many times during long drives, runs, hikes, cleaning house or such activities.

SILOS, POLITICS AND TURF WARS By Patrick Lencioni
Unabridged Audio Book - 3 hours and 36 minutes
A business fiction book that journals a consultants journey through multiple projects that have negative political aspects to them and then the book concludes with a strong lessons learned section. I really liked the flow of this book and how it lets the reader make conclusions.

THE FIVE DYSFUNCTION'S OF A TEAM By Patrick Lencioni
Unabridged Audio Book - 3 hours and 45 minutes
In the same series and format as the book above, this book helped give me insight to how some teams can be dysfunctional, how awareness of the condition can be implemented and how to pull a team together stronger than ever. This book is a bit heavy on the VP context and this has reduced benefits for us developer types. However, I would still recommend it.

DEATH BY MEETING By Patrick Lencioni
Unabridged Audio Book - 4 hours and 25 minutes
Just starting this book and should have it consumed by the end of the year. The book is supposed to discuss the attributes of effective meeting management.

INSIDE THE TORNADO By Geoffrey A. Moore
Abridged Audio Book - 3 hours and 4 minutes
Required reading for a UW class, I have found the early lessons of the book invaluable in reexamining some of my viewpoints on how software products evolve in the marketplace. Some of the vendor and products references are a bit historic (bordering on prehistoric) but the underlying concepts are still rock solid.

THE STEVE JOBS WAY: iLeadership For A New Generation - Jay Elliot
Unabridged Audio Book - 6 hours and 50 minutes
Purchased this after his death and looking at how much of this has to do with the business management during key points in Apple's rise to prominence. Found it to be an excellent "lessons learned" resource that can be leveraged in many ways.
