If you are working with a freshly installed copy of FileMaker, you might notice that any new field you create in the Define Fields dialog starts to appear in the bottom of the current layout. This is one of of those features in FileMaker that has one of the largest “Oh Dang Nabbit” shouts from beginner to advanced developer alike.
The setting for this can be found in the FileMaker preferences area and under the Layout tab. By default, this option is checked and one of the first things you will want to do is uncheck it.
As well intended this feature is, it almost never puts the field where you want it and how you want it. So it is better to turn this option off and manually place newly created fields where you actually want them.
