Here is a simple tip that can spruce up your FileMaker portal rows! You can add a serial number to your portal rows for display purposes. This does not affect the data in the child file at all but is a nice visual indicator what portal row a user is viewing.

When in layout mode, add the characters of @@ to an empty space in the row.

Depending on how many rows you think you may have, allow enough space to see a full number. Normally 3 characters is enough room. If you have a portal showing more than 999 rows of information, your portal is probably not that useful. When you go back to Browse mode, your your portal will now display a number value in each row and in sequential order!
